Eastbourne Town FC Start Strong
Strong start to the season for Eastbourne Town Football Club
Eastbourne Town travelled to the picturesque ground of Arundel on Saturday for there first encounter of the new season .
Town got off to the better start and looked hungry to avenge last seasons 3-2 defeat at the hand of the Mullets .
Arundel looked shaky in defence and it was captain Luke Denton who fired the first salvo at the Arundel goal , but it was a little off target .Liam Baitup was particularly unlucky when he just failed to get to a long throw by Denton and the goalkeeper cleanly gathered the lose ball .
However as the half wore on , with all their possesion ,Town just could not prise open the Strong Arundel defence , and it was no surprise when the Mullets broke away , and took the lead on 25 minutes through large centre forward Kane .He held off a challenge from a Town defender , and managed to just slip the ball past Greg Nessling in the Town goal to give the Mullets a 1-0 lead .Thats the way it stayed up till half time , and Town left the field feeling a little hard done by to be losing at the half way stage .
However a tatical change saw speedy winger Mark goodwin brought on for defender Carl Harris and it brought about an immediate effect .
Twice following the restart , Goodwin tormented the left back of Arundel , and left him in his wake , but his shots at goal both times whistled past the Arundel upright .Town were really starting to impose them selves on the game now , and it was no surprise when they equalised on 63 minutes .
Luke Denton who scrapped away hard in midfield all afternoon won the ball , he fed it to debutant Chris Dicker , and his delightful cross was met on the volley by Baitup who made no mistake from 6 yards .
Bobby Godfrey was replaced by James Body and an injury to Greg Manton saw Gary Brockwell brought into the fray .Arundel threatened to take back their lead , but Nessling was equal to there efforts on his goal .Baitup then hit the post and bar of the Arundel goal after he was set up by Brockwell and Goodwin , but he made no mistake with his next effort .
A corner routine was played out to Adam Davidson , whos first time cross fell onto the head of Baitup and he buried his chance to give Town the lead .
Town were in full flow now , and their confidence seemed to grow as the game wore on .
However on 88 minutes Town wrapped up the 3 points when Dicker spotted Baitup free with a superb ball , this set Baitup free of the Arundel defence , with just the goalkeeper to beat , and he calmly lobbed the ball over the keeper and into the back of the Arundel net to give Town a superb start to the season .
