Eastbourne Town FC victory over Redhill
Eastbourne Down FC away victory against Redhill
Town returned from the long midweek trek up the A23 to Redhill with all 3 points thanks to goals from Danny Simmonds ,Shaun Brownall and Gary Brockwell .
The early exchanges between the sides were pretty much even ,but on 12 mins Mark Goodwin raced away down the left and found John Piercy , he cleverly pulled the ball back across to Bobby Godfrey whos shot was parried into the path of the onrushing Gary Brockwell and his thunderous shot cannoned off the Redhill crossbar and away to safety .Bobby Godfrey then had a header well saved from a pinpoint Brockwell cross .
On 22 mins town took the lead .James Body won a free kick on the left of the Redhill penalty area , Simmonds began a late run into the area , which was well spotted by Piercy , and the ball was delivered to his feet and he tapped the ball past the helpless Redhill keeper .
However Redhill had continually played the quick ball forward testing Peter Featherstone and Shaun Brownall in the Town defence , and on 30 mins they equalised .
This time a free kick just in the Town half was punted upfield aimlessly , Featherstone seemed to leave the ball for Greg Nessling in the Town goal , but Luke Jones nipped in between them both to head the ball home .
Town seemed to be rocked by the soft equaliser and took some time to get any shape back to their play , but with Goodwin continually terrorising the Redhill defence with his blistering pace it was he who sparked the next meaningful Town attack .Goodwin got away again from his covering defender , his excellent cross found Godfrey who again failed to beat the goalkeeper with a tame header at goal .Chris Dicker then had a good run and shot at goal again well saved by the keeper as it looked like the teams would go into the interval all square .But it was not to be .Another free kick was won , this time by Brockwell , Piercy delivered a superb ball onto the head of Simmonds , he directed his header back across goal , and the towering head of Shaun Brownall applied the finishing touch , making it 2-1 to Town at half time .
Redhill started the second half well , causing the Town defence a few problems ,and they forced an early succession of corners , one of whcih brought a good save from Town keeper Nessling .
On 60 mins a heavy challenge on Brownall left him laying flat out on the ground , the referee saw nothing wrong with the challenge and waved play on , a poor challenge from a Town defender left the ball at the feet of Gillett , and he had time to pick his spot and score the equaliser for Redhill .
Town continued to look the better side going forward , Body won another free kick and this time piercy strode up and majestically beat the keeper with a curling free kick , but it thundered against the crossbar and away to safety .With Redhills tired legs Towns attack of the pacy Brockwell and Goodwin continually caused problems in the Redhill defence and on 70 mins it was the sheer pace of Brockwell which won Town the match .Godfrey and Piercy combined well to slide the ball into the Town attacker , he outpaced the covering defender , and calmly slotted home to give Town the lead .
It was no more than Town deserved , and took the sting out of Redhill as they rarely threatened after that .Town gradually run down the clock to the final whistle , but will know they were made to fight all the way for another three valuable points by a stubborn Redhill side .
