QUALITY GOALS KEEP TOWN TOP OF COUNTY LEAGUE
TWO quality goals saw Eastbourne Town to a 2-0 win over Arundel at the Saffrons today as they stayed at the top of the County League's first division.
A swirling win made good football difficult and both sides struggled to get their game together during a scrappy first half.
But the game was brought to life with a vengeance with a sensational strike from Gary Brockwell in the 29th minute.
Brockwell ran from the halfway line on the left flank and as the Arundel defence retreated, he let fly with an edge-of-the-area drive which rocketed into the roof of the net.
Town looked livelier after the interval and Liam Baitup was unlucky to have what looked a good goal disallowed in the 54th minute when he was judged to have fouled Dave Walker before finding the corner of the net.
Not there was no disputing Baitup's killer goal in the 78th minute, the young striker turning his marker beautifully in the box before firing perfectly into the far corner of the net from an angle on the right
The game saw the return of Danny Simmonds following his stay in Australia. The midfielder got through much good work only to spoil his day by failing to head home John Piercy's cross from six yards.
Manager Ady Colwell said afterwards, "We have had to dig deep today, but that makes us three clean sheets so perhaps we have turned the corner. Maybe the players are starting to believe they are the top side in the County League."
