The Worshipful the Mayor of Eastbourne Councillor Olive Woodall is once again opening doors across Eastbourne for locals to find out more about what the town has to offer, at the Mayor’s Open Day.

Held on Sunday 2nd May, the annual celebration of Eastbourne will see local venues open up with special offers, tours and demonstrations, ending in a musical spectacular complete with fireworks at the Bandstand.

This years theme ‘Beside the Seaside…… Beside the Sea’ will include many activities along Eastbourne seafront, including local budding artists presenting their seascapes and nautical scenes at the Bandstand as the Mayor judges the Art Competition, with prizes of art materials and equipment from Plan-A-Head Reprographics and Fine Art Suppliers.

Other seaside themes include the fantastic coastal views from City Sightseeing open top bus trips up to Beachy Head, on special offer for the day. Ride the Dotto Train along the seafront for just 50p, or ride the wave machines in the fun pool at the Sovereign Centre with free entry between 5 and 6pm.

At Sovereign Harbour, Allchorn Boats new recruit and ex-lifeboat ‘The Robert’, will also be open for onboard tours alongside the RNLI Lifeboat, as well as participating in the Sovereign Harbour Fun Weekend, also held over the Bank Holiday from 1st – 3rd May. A classic bus service runs from the Western Lawns to the harbour throughout the day on Sunday 2nd and Monday 3rd May.

Around the town, budding journalists can get their own exclusive story with a behind the scenes tour of Beckett Newspapers, or music enthusiasts can visit the Underground Theatre for a spot of Jazz, part of a varied programme of music, dance and theatre.

Sport enthusiasts can try out the free training at Eastbourne United, based at The Oval, Channel View Road, try out the facilities on offer at David Lloyd Leisure with free entry, or enjoy a spot of croquet for free at Compton Croquet Club. Princes Park and Helen Gardens will also be opening up the Petanque and Putting greens for just 50p per person, while Princes Park Model Boat Club put on a fascinating display of model boats in the boating lake from miniature yachts to mini cruisers.

For some spiritual, historical and architectural splendour join a historical tour of All Saint’s Church or marvel at the Byzantine listed building of All Soul’s Church. Author of the Thomas the Tank Engine stories, Christopher Awdry will also be making a special appearance at the Eastbourne Miniature Steam Railway Family Fun Weekend from 1st – 3rd May.

Local groups and societies will be providing an exhibition on the Western Lawns, alongside the Magnificent Motors event of classic cars, vintage buses, motorbikes and steam traction engines which is also being held over the weekend from 2nd – 3rd May. The day includes a seafront cavalcade of vintage vehicles and there will be plenty of children’s attractions including traditional fairground rides, including a Galloper’s Carousel.

The day rounds off with some rock n roll fun at the Bandstand courtesy of popular rockabilly trio, The River Boys. Instrumental guitar band Lost 4 Words will also be providing their special brand of 50’s and 60’s music ranging from The Shadows to Duane Eddy, and the day ends in a fantastic fireworks finale at 10pm.

The Mayor of Eastbourne, Councillor Olive Woodall said “This is a great opportunity for the residents of Eastbourne to celebrate our seaside and nautical heritage, thanks to all of the local businesses and organisations providing free activities, special offers and tours for all ages.

The people of Eastbourne can look forward to an action packed day, ending with Eastbourne’s very own seafront party at one of our greatest seafront assets - the Bandstand.”
