School Children Plant 150 Trees
A once barren play area is being transformed by local school children who are planting 150 trees at Sovereign Harbour.

The play area in Vancouver Road has recently been landscaped with tons of new soil to help new plants grow. Two groups of children from the Haven school will plant the trees on Tuesday 22nd February 2005.

Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Spokesperson for the Environment Councillor David Elkin says, The trees will be the finishing touch to an excellent facility and the children planting them will encourage their preservation and enjoy them in future years.

Three different types of tree will be planted by the youngsters; 50 Austrian pine (Pinus nigra Austriaca), 50 Common Hawthorn (Crataegus laevigata) and 50 Field maple (Acer campestre). The trees have been paid for as part of the Environment Agency Action Earth, to help community based projects.

There is a variety of play equipment for children including multi-play units for toddlers and older children, junior swings, toddler swings, balance beams and a picnic table and bench. The playground was opened more than a year ago.

The site was prepared at the beginning of the month for the tree planting by local Police Cadets who moved and dug in ten tonnes of topsoil to ensure the trees will thrive in their new location.
