Eastbourne enjoys many world-renowned gardens within easy reach and nine historical castles throughout Sussex. Amongst those is Pevensey Castle just 8 miles from Eastbourne and the magnificent moated Herstmonceux Castle and Science Observatory set in beautiful parkland and superb Elizabethan gardens, both well worth a visit. For those looking for a gentle get away, why not take part in a guided walk or environmental event that offers winter bird watching or meeting the heavy horses at Wilderness Wood. If you prefer your own adventure, hire a mountain bike around Friston Forest and the meandering Cuckmere River or really get in the winter spirit and try your hand at skiing and snowboarding at Knockhatch Ski Centre, Hailsham less than 10 miles outside Eastbourne.
