Play Tennis for Free at Devonshire Park Lawn Tennis Club
Eastbournes most prestigious tennis club is opening its grass courts this weekend for all keen tennis players to join in the LTA Play Tennis event, completely free of charge.
Eastbournes most prestigious tennis club is opening its grass courts this weekend for all keen tennis players to join in the LTA Play Tennis event, completely free of charge.

The Devonshire Park Lawn Tennis Club and the Lawn Tennis Association are sending out a clear message across the town saying Whoever You Are, However You Play, Whatever Your Age Play Tennis for Free.

The LTAs Play Tennis scheme is being rolled out across the country with over 1,100 clubs, parks and schools taking part. As a world renown venue popular with tennis aces such as Lindsey Davenport, and home to some of the best grass courts in the world, Devonshire Park is offering two days of free tennis.

Juniors can play on Saturday 1st May with 3 9 year olds from 11am to 12.30pm and 10 16 year olds from 1 2.30pm, adults have their day on Sunday 2nd May from 1 5pm. The Clubs qualified Coach is on hand to provide everyone with advice and training from learning a basic forehand to serving the perfect ace! There will be prizes to be won and visitors on Saturday can also enjoy a childrens Bouncy Castle and free pizza courtesy of Dominos Pizza.

The Devonshire Park Lawn Tennis Club recently opened its grass courts for the 2004 season on 24th April at the International Lawn Tennis Centre. In a joint venture with Eastbourne Borough Council, the club is offering specially subsidised membership packages for children and families.

Under 18s can enjoy membership at just 25 for the season, or a family of four with two adults and two children aged under 16 can enjoy a total membership package of just 100. Special discounts also operate for students and players with disabilities with a membership rate of just 35.

Members can enjoy a game of tennis on one of the most prestigious courts in the world with on site changing rooms and shower facilities. The club is providing its own qualified coach for the first time ever to help all members improve their game, including wheelchair tennis, and also provide a series of competitive events such as the junior club tournament from 9 14 August.

Members who wish to attend the Hastings Direct International Championships from 12 19 June, also receive concessions as part of the membership package.

Club Secretary Mike Hanlon said We hope to encourage local people to do more than just watch tennis. By having a go at the Play Tennis event, we hope more local people will enjoy the game and use our facilities throughout the season.

With such a strong tennis heritage in our town it is important to carry on the tradition starting with our players of the future, which is why we are offering such good deals on junior and family membership.

The Play Tennis scheme achieved great success in 2003 with 58,000 people taking part across the country, and 45% of these having either never played before or having only played a few times.

The season continues through to 5th September and standard adult membership costs 113. Alternatively for those who prefer to enjoy only the occasional game, court hire is available at 12 per court per hour.
